Michigan review team report details roots

The Michigan advisory team sent to examine Detroit’s finances blames elected officials for the city’s fiscal crisis, saying they failed to curb spending even as residents fled the city, piling up debt that now threatens basic services.

The 10-member Financial Review Team concluded its 90-day audit of Detroit on Monday, declaring the city in a state of “severe financial stress” but stopping short of recommending the appointment of an emergency manager to take over the city of 714,000.

Governor Snyder says he’s still talking with Detroit officials about an agreement to keep the city financially afloat. A state review team has already declared a “severe financial emergency” in Detroit. That means they’ll recommend some kind of state intervention to keep the city from going broke.

The Governor says talks continue over what a “financial stability agreement” will look like.

Unions say Detroit city workers agree to pay cuts

About 30 unions have ratified contracts to help Detroit through its cash crisis and to avoid further state intervention in the city’s finances. About 18 AFSCME unions and others in the coalition announced Friday they have ratified contracts that will save the city some $135 million, union leaders said. Detroit dad charged with murder of daughter

A Detroit man who told police his 2-year-old daughter was abducted during a carjacking was charged in her death Wednesday, more than three months after the child disappeared.

D’Andre Lane had begged the public to find his daughter, Bianca Jones, a plea that inspired dozens of volunteers to comb some of the city’s roughest neighborhoods in early December. He denies wrongdoing and insists he was carjacked and that thieves drove off with the girl strapped in her car seat.
