Detroit unions to end talks if state plan accepted

Detroit’s public employee unions will not negotiate more cost-cutting agreements with the city if it agrees to a state-mandated financial plan designed to stop Detroit from running out of money, the head of a major city union said on Monday.

The financial stability agreement drafted by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder’s administration would require significantly deeper concessions from city unions than have already been agreed to. Opposition to the plan has come as the city’s elected leaders and state-appointed officials work to agree on Snyder’s financial plan for Detroit.

Michigan review team report details roots

The Michigan advisory team sent to examine Detroit’s finances blames elected officials for the city’s fiscal crisis, saying they failed to curb spending even as residents fled the city, piling up debt that now threatens basic services.

The 10-member Financial Review Team concluded its 90-day audit of Detroit on Monday, declaring the city in a state of “severe financial stress” but stopping short of recommending the appointment of an emergency manager to take over the city of 714,000.

Unions say Detroit city workers agree to pay cuts
