Detroit Showing Swagger With New Model Debuts

U.S. automakers haven’t been this happy in years. They’re gaining market share, raking in profits, cranking up production and welcoming back consumers who are finally in the mood to spend. Even the unseasonably warm January weather has put Detroit in a good mood. What better way to kick off the annual North American International Auto Show.

More than 40 new cars and trucks will be unveiled during this week’s media preview, which begins today. For General Motors, Ford Motor and Chrysler Group, the challenge is to prove their recent comebacks are for real and not just a fluke resulting from an unfortunate string of setbacks for their Asian competitors.

$1M grant offered in Detroit home-buying effort

The funding will be used by homebuyers for mortgage down payments on vacant houses to help revitalize parts of the city, Chase Foundation officials said. More >

Temp hits 80 in Detroit for record 45th straight day

Metro Detroit’s long, hot summer has been a record-breaker, according to the National Weather Service.

Tuesday marked the 45th straight day the high temperature hit at least 80 degrees, with the mercury reaching 83 as of 4 p.m. at Detroit Metro Airport. The region’s hot streak tops the previous mark, 42 days, set in 1955. More >
